Sátoraljaújhely

Sátoraljaújhely: Remembering the Miracle Rabbi This charming little town of 15,000 is the best-known Jewish pilgrimage site in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. For more than a century and a half, crowds of pilgrims have visited the grave of Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum (Yismach Moshe), the founder of Hasidism in Hungary, which is concealed within an ohel (stone tent) clad in modern architectural design. Rabbi Teitelbaum settled in Újhely in 1808. His charismatic personality was revered as that of a tzaddik; his advice was sought in all areas of life, and many also sought him out for his talismans—known as kameas—which were believed to possess healing and protective powers. During his 33 years of activity, Rabbi Teitelbaum founded a yeshiva, engaged in literary work, and preached.
